After the Kick in the ass that Congress received for Vijay Divas and Egypt MMS and Sonia ji seem to be in a hurry to do some damage control exercise. Let the soul of the martyred soldiers lie in peace.
war memorial... very important!!we have dwindling nos of fighters, artillery and even basic stuff like assault rifles, radio sets and night vision equipment and there goes our PM howling for a war memorial.I'm sure our fallen Jawans would be happier if the money is spent keeping the sovereignity of the land intact then to build some memorial which serves little a purpose. Or as a beginner, you could perhaps spend some money on their wife/children. I'm sure that will be more fruitful than a monument
It's a sad show the so many years after independence we're incapable of constructing a memorial to the men who've fallen protecting those freedoms. Good job exposing it Shiv. May your tribe grow.
BEFORE THE MEMORIAL - DO WE REALLY MEAN IT?I came across this piece of news about an American Navy pilot Captain Speicher who went missing in the first Gulf war in Iraq.http://militarytimes.com/blogs/scoopdeck/Most people knew he was probably dead since his aircraft had crashed. The Navy continued to categorise him as 'missing/captured' and later 'missing in action',like most navies would do.However what amazed me was the following part of the news:Speicher, who was shot down Jan. 17, 1991, was the first casualty of the Gulf War. He was a lieutenant commander at the time and his since been promoted twice in his absence.Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead said: “Our Navy will never give up looking for a shipmate, regardless of how long or how difficult that search may be. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Captain Speicher and his family for the sacrifice they have made for our nation and the example of strength they have set for all of us.”Compare the above with this story on rediff which appeared in 2000:http://www.rediff.com/news/2000/apr/22akd.htmCan we have a Speicher in India? Can we protect the dignity and honour of our fallen/missing soldiers?Let us build memorials alright but first let us give them their due respect.regards,Yogesh
Something off topic here but Shiv do you have any updates on Light Combat Helicopter? It was supposed to be in air by August.
Shiv-ji,I feel instead of spending on such , why not our Govt. increase the pay scale for our men in uniform which would be of real benefit to them...It looks like a political gimmick
Hope we get to see the War Memorial soon.
The memorial will be of more importance if the armed forces are not modernised soon
Memorials may be of no interest to the dead; but they are to the living. The faith that a nation remembers and that your cause is just motivates others to follow in the footsteps of fallen comrades, if the situation so demands. The family you leave behind have a hope that it was not all a waste. Memorials Vs Money Vs Armament is a debate that only a nation/individual with no worthwhile military tradition can really initiate. VISIT KOHIMA or ANY OTHER WORLD WAR MEMORIAL WORLD OVER AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHY A TINY NATION COULD RULE THE WORLD.
